Cantonese-style moon cake is beautifully shaped with clear and exquisite pattern characterized by thin skin. There are two different tastes: salty and sweet. The different fillings include: lotus seed, almond, olive kernel, peach kernel, green bean, sesame, salty egg, roast goose, dried mushrooms, ice meat, sweet wax gourd, shelled shrimps, etc.
Besides there are also stuffing of salty yolk, barbeque pork, toasted duck, winter Chinese mushroom, shrimp, lemon leaves and so on amount to 30 materials.In recent years, there is fruit moon cake which is filled with pineapple, durian banana and so on other fruits.
This traditional food is related to the Mid-Autumn Festival tightly. The festival is for lunar worship and moon watching; moon cakes are regarded as an indispensable delicacy on this occasion. Because of its central role in the Mid-Autumn festival, moon cakes remained popular even in recent years. For many, moon cakes form a central part of the Mid-Autumn festival experience such that it is now commonly known as ‘Moon cake Festival’.
Lian Xiang Lou Restaurant, Guangzhou Restaurant, Tao Tao Ju Restaurant, Quxiang Cookhouse, etc, are the representatives of producing Guangdong-style moon cakes. The most famous moon cakes are “Taotaojusang Moon Cake” made by Tao Tao Ju Restaurant and “Lotus Moon Cake” made by Lian Xiang Lou Restaurant, etc.
