The Ancient Huangpu Port of Guangzhou , located southeast of the Pazhou Pagoda in Haizhu District (near Huangpu Village and Shiqi Village) , used to be a show window of the bomming Chinese maritime trade during the 17th and 18th Centuries as well as a hub of economic and cultural exchange between China and western countries. As enormous change took place later, the Huangpu River course stilled up, the port was no longer a suitable berth for commercial boats and it gradually lost its thriving situation.
In the year 2006, before a replica of Gothenburg, the ancient Swedish merchant ship, paid a visit to Guangzhou. The landscape area includes an Ancient Port Park, a sculpture commemorating Gothenburg’s visit to Guangzhou and a stretch of river bank accessible to water. A leisure zone has been set up along the trestles of the ancient wharf, where visitors can trace the historical marks left by the ancient port and taste the water culture in ancient times.
This place is steeped in history , with its fascinating Lingnan region of river and lakes, and modern snacks and festivals….
