Things to Do in City Centre During Your Stopover at Guangzhou Airport

If you have not been to Guangzhou, you are missing one of southern China’s modern, vibrant and historical cities. Instead of spending your layover time waiting in the airport, why not do some sightseeing, sample some traditional southern Chinese foods, or do some shopping? These and more things are possible if you have 6  hours or more between flights. Reading this article will show you how to visit Guangzhou and make the most of your valuable time.

Before starting your visit to Guangzhou, pack a small handbag or carry-on with essentials and leave your other luggage in storage at the airport. Your luggage will be safe, and you will not need to carry around heavy bags. To save time and money, it is recommended to take the Metro from the airport to the city center. The trip takes 35-40 minutes and costs 7 RMB. A taxi will take longer (45-60 minutes, depending on traffic) and cost more.

To return to Guangzhou Airport from the city, use the same metro stations but in reverse order. Be sure you allow yourself at least 3 hours at the airport to check-in and go through security before boarding your plane.

Beijing Road Beijing Road one of Guangzhou’s most famous pedestrian streets, was once a road regularly used by government officials in ancient China. Chen Clan Academy .The Chen Clan Academy, locally named the Chen Ancestral Hall, was located outside the west gate of Guangzhou City and built during the 14th to 20th years of Guangxu Reign of the Qing Dynasty (1888—1894).All the architectural decorations in the academy, the wood carvings, brick carvings, stone carvings, ceramic sculptures, lime sculptures, iron castings and paintings are of varied topics and super workmanship, which make a comprehensive expression of the exquisite folk arts and handicrafts of the local province.

Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street
Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street is located in the Liwan District of Xiguan, a prosperous traditional commercial district. It is the first commercial pedestrian street in Guangzhou. Walking into this street, you will see the featured Qi Lou, an old building style that exists in Guangzhou and its neighboring areas, on both sides of the road. It reflects the strong Lingnan Culture. On this street lie more than 200 stores, especially those brand name restaurants and teahouses open here like Guangzhou Restaurant, Panxi Restaurant, Tao Tao Ju Restaurant, Lian xiang Lou Restaurant.

Take Metro Line 3 from Guangzhou Airport. After 3 stops, you will get off at Jiahewanggang Metro Station. Shaimian Island
Shamian Island Shamian Island was an important port for Guangzhou’s foreign trade from the Song to the Qing Dynasty. From the 18th to the mid-19th century, the foreigners lived and did business in a row of houses known as the Thirteen Factories, near the present Shamian, which was then an anchorage for thousands of boat people.The island was awarded to the British and French after the Opium Wars and European style architecture abounds here and the colonial influence is evident in houses, villas, churches and tennis courts.

Western Han Nanyue Royal Tomb Museum
.Nanyue Royal Tomb Museum is the oldest and largest Han tomb with the most funerary objects in Lingnan (South of the Nanling Mountain) Area. As one of the 80 famous museums in the world, the museum covers 14,000 square meters (150, 699.6 square feet) with 10 exhibition halls.The tomb was discovered in 1983, The tomb measures 10.85 meters in length and 12.43 meters in width. It is divided in 7 parts, with a front chamber, east and west wing rooms, the main coffin chamber, east and west side rooms, and a back storage chamber.

Located in Zhujiang New Town, the Guangzhou Opera House is one of the 7 newly-built landmarks. The opera house includes a 36,400-square-meter Grand Theater, a 7,400-square-meter multifunctional theater and other auxiliary facilities. Designed by renowned British architect Zaha Hadid, it looks like a twin boulder with two stones on a subdued massif. There’s a guided tour at 10am, 11am, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm everyday between Tuesday and Sunday.

Take Metro Line 3 from Guangzhou Airport, Get off at Tiyu Xilu Metro Station, after getting off the train and you need to transfer another train (still Line 3) that is opposite of train Line 3. (Line 3 was divide into airport extend line and downtown line ), Get off Zhujiang New Town Metro Station, Exit B1, walk across the road and turn right, it is about 8 minutes of walking.

Tip:
Transit without a visa in Guangzhou does not permit leaving the airport.
Visa-free Entry

A foreign citizen can enter China without a visa under any one of the following circumstances:

1) Direct Transit
A foreign citizen who is transiting through China by air is exempted from a visa if he/she will stay only in the airport for no more than 24 hours and has a valid connecting ticket with confirmed seating on an international flight.
Citizens holding passports issued by the following countries are exempted from a visa if transiting through Shanghai and staying for no more than 48 hours in Shanghai. These visitors can leave the airport but must enter and exit from China via Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport or Shanghai Pudong International Airport: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, andthe United States of America.

2) Citizens of Singapore, Brunei and Japan
A citizen of Singapore, Brunei or Japan with an ordinary passport is exempted from a visa if he/she visits China’s mainland for tourism purpose, business, or meeting with friends or relatives, enters China through ports open to foreigners, and stays for no more than 15 days.
