Yuexiu Park is the largest park in downtown Guangzhou. As such, this can be a lovely place to take a walk and although it is a popular spot, the crowds are made more bearable thanks to the sheer size of the place.
Yuexiu Park is a nice place to spend a pleasant afternoon. There are lot’s of interesting things to see here as it’s a huge park. The Zenhai Tower,Sculpture of the Five Rams and the Sun Yatsen Monument were the highlights for me and also just people watching.
Yuexiu Park consists of seven peaks with the main peak being the Yuejing Peak, and three artificial lakes – Beixiu Lake, Nanxiu Lake, and Dongxiu Lake. The Park has been well known for the beautiful hills and waters and plenty of historical relics that you can enjoy at ease in the park.
The Five-Ram Sculpture is one of the most famous structures in Guangzhou. It has become the emblem of Guangzhou City. It was erected in 1959 at the top of Yuexiu Hill. This landmark sculpture is located in Yuexiu Park. One of the most popular and visited tourist sites here. A photo opportunity to prove that you have been to Guangzhou. Legend has it that long ago there were five celestial beings, who wore robes of five colours. The legend behind the sculpture is something about five celestial beings riding through the air on rams to bring rice to the first settlers of the area. One day they rode rams through the air to Guangzhou, each carrying a stem of rice. They presented the people with the rice stems as a sign from heaven that the area would be free from famine forever. Apparently the city than took the name City of Rams, or Goat City. Guangzhou in Chinese, however, means ‘broad region”.
The Zhenhai Tower was sort of interesting. Currently it houses a museum that has some decent displays. was built under the orders of Zhu Liangzu, the Yongjia Marquis of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), to flaunt his power and the obsession that he was able to shake the seas and mountains. A magnificent building, it commands a bird’s-eye view of the whole city. The tower now houses the City MuseumI had a hard time to know what things were as everything was written in Chinese but still interesting to look at. There were 5 floors of displays. its exhibits chronicle the history of Guangzhou from Neolithic times till the early part of the 20th century.
As a large comprehensive park, Yuexiu Park provides an amusement park, swimming pool, gymnasium, restaurants, stalls, museum and art museum besides plant and flower viewing area. All visitors find pleasure in Yuexiu Park.
